Honorable Mention
Keep Them Closer
M. Kathryn Black

In the house of my ancestors
I make a place for my enemies,
give each an antique cherry bed
covered with the finest silk quilts.

The ones who hate me most take
the beds closest to mine; they want
to keep watch, and I ignore them,
tenderly rearrange the family artifacts.

As I turn my bed around, it scrapes
with dissonace on the wooden floor;
at least I'll not be head to head
with the witch that moans and snores.

While they meet I'll cook good roast beef
with mushroom gravy, mashed potatoes,
salad, and alot of carrots and stringbeans.
I will add a couple of leaves to the table.

I'll not disabuse them of thinking they're elite,
the favored ones of God, His chosen children.
I'll set a fire in the evening when they're done,
fetch the towels and wash dishes until three.
